Pilgrimage

To paraphrase the famous opening lines of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, “When the spring is in the air…people long to go on pilgrimages.” It wasn’t in the spring, but last summer I felt strangely and strongly compelled to start 2019 by going on a pilgrimage. I wasn’t sure where or even what I was looking for, but my soul was craving renewal and a fresh perspective. I carry a heavy spiritual and emotional burden for our community, church members, and church staff. As much as I want to lessen or avoid it at times, I cannot. It is what a senior pastor does.

Are your relationships becoming ‘relationslips’?

One of my ongoing goals is to build new relationships and grow current relationships healthier. The longer I live, the more I realize the quality of our relationships determine the quality of our life. Relationship building is a skill we must continually practice, take risks in and improve upon.

NDSU Bison football and sustaining greatness

On Jan. 5, 2019, in Frisco, Texas, the North Dakota State University Bison football team continued one of the most dominating stretches ever accomplished in college athletics. After defeating the Eastern Washington Eagles 38 to 24, the Bison football team has won the Division 1 FCS championship seven out of eight years. It is not easy to ascend to the top of any sport at any level, and even more difficult to remain there over a period of time. Many books have been written and stories told on how to win a championship; how to scale the mountain; how to achieve greatness. Even more difficult is to sustain greatness; to maintain hunger; to repeat as king of the hill; to excel amidst the fans’ impossible expectations.

Let’s continue our discussion on maturity from the book of James in the Bible. There are five chapters in James, and each chapter teaches us a mark of maturity. In chapter one the mark of maturity is “How do I react to problems?” In chapter two, “How do I treat other people?” In chapter three, “Do I control what I say?”
