What are you fighting for?

I recently read an article that talked about a man’s battle against an addiction. He said there was a phrase in one of the books he read that really stuck out to him. The phrase was, “Remember what you are fighting for.” He said those words became life-changing for him when temptation would arise.

Unexpected memories from unexpected outings

Do you ever wonder how you get yourself in situations? It was the last Saturday before the start of a new school year as our daughter enters middle school life. The required item was earbuds for the laptop she will be assigned. The suggested stores were not appealing but I had a bright revelation, I could take her to Best Buy; winning brownie points as a husband and dad while browsing through all sorts of fun “toys.” Who knows, I may even slip in a purchase for myself without using any of my “blow money.” …

You will never know unless you go

In April of 2000 I resigned from my engineering job in Minneapolis. Our family loved living in the Twin Cities. We were near family for the first time in our married life, had a great church home, good friends and good jobs. We were comfortable. But in 1993, we accepted a mission God placed on our heart: to help one more person find hope and life in Jesus Christ based on 1 Corinthians 9:23. So, we were moving to Fargo-Moorhead to start a new church for people who don’t like going to church.

Should you choose to accept it…

Prayer can be dangerous

For those who believe in the practice and power of prayer there are many words that come to our mind when we think about prayer: encouraging, enlightening, helpful, meaningful, hopeful, calming or strengthening are some that would be common. Dangerous is probably not a word that comes to most of our minds when we think of prayer. But prayer can definitely be dangerous, for several reasons.

What I pray for

I consider it a huge honor and blessing to write this column and share time with you each Sunday. I hope there are readers who are walking with the Lord who are strengthened and encouraged by our time together. I hope there are readers who are atheists, agnostics, skeptical or seekers who gain insight for building healthier relationships and lives; perhaps even take an incremental step towards God. Wherever you are at spiritually, I am truly grateful for you and thrilled you are reading my column, whether for the first time, you’re an occasional reader or a regular reader. Each of us are on a journey, we have more in common than we think and we are better together.

I knew I was in Montana

Last fall, I was blessed to give the nontechnical keynote talk at High Point Networks Technical Conference, HiPoCON. I met amazing people and enjoyed the experience greatly. The Fargo event was at Scheels Arena and the Sioux Falls, S.D., event at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. The third location was Billings, Mont…
