Why volleyball?

Three years ago, the West Fargo Sheyenne High School Mustang volleyball team held a three-week volleyball camp for elementary girls. Our daughter, Brooke, brought the flyer home and asked to attend. She enjoyed participating two consecutive years. The camp culminated with the girls being invited to one of the Mustang games. Brooke and I went for our first experience at high school volleyball.

What does compassion in our home look like?

Veterans Day changes today

On this Veterans Day, our son is being deployed to Afghanistan. My wife wrote the following thoughts in her journal:

As a parent, I dream about my kid’s future. I pray for their future spouse. I pray Brooke won’t have the difficulties I had with infertility. I pray Nate grows into the man God wants him to be. I also process the bad things they may face so we can direct them away from danger.

Are you connecting with your children?

When I think of what it takes to be a great dad, one of the key characteristics is a consistent commitment to connect with your children; to get into their world, their turf, their interests; to discover and discern their needs and hear their perspective; to be a great listener even when you are tired.

As parents, it takes great self-leadership to connect with our children, but there is a powerful potential unleashed when we authentically connect with them.
