Three years ago, the West Fargo Sheyenne High School Mustang volleyball team held a three-week volleyball camp for elementary girls. Our daughter, Brooke, brought the flyer home and asked to attend. She enjoyed participating two consecutive years. The camp culminated with the girls being invited to one of the Mustang games. Brooke and I went for our first experience at high school volleyball.

As a young adult, Katrina vowed she “would not set food in a church or allow congregational members to dictate how I would or would not live my life. I had put in enough church time for the rest of my life. No thanks, not interested.” Katrina and her husband faced painful circumstances losing three daughters: their first daughter was a late miscarriage, the second stillbirth, and the third lived for an hour and a half.

Having written a weekly column for three years now I have learned a lot about the process. Some weeks the topic and content comes very quickly. I love those weeks. There have been a number of times when I have even written two or tree columns at a time. That is even better. Often, though, I wrestle with what to write about.

You are wired for relationships. The worst punishment known to man is solitary confinement. Jeff Haden, contributing editor to Inc, wrote: “A clinical review of nearly 150 studies on friendships found that people with strong social ties had a 50 percent better chance of survival, regardless of age, sex, health status, and cause of death, than those with weaker ties. The conclusion was based on information on more than 300,000 individuals who were followed for an average of 7.5 years. In fact, according to the researchers, the health risk of having few friends was similar to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and more dangerous than being obese or not exercising in terms of decreasing your lifespan.”

We all have our blind-spots and areas of our life where we have significant room for growth. I recently went to a high school football game and a mom of one of the players was sitting behind my family and me. She stood out, unfortunately, for a wrong reason. She swore, complained and grumbled more and was significantly more negative than any fan I have witnessed. One play, while loudly complaining about the lack of results, the running back broke away and ran for another 10 yards!

In November of 2017, 10-year-old Landon Solberg of West Fargo received a terrifying diagnosis: He had an aggressive brain tumor with a life expectancy of two years. Many people and organizations rallied around Landon and his family. Landon rallied around his faith in Christ. In the midst of ongoing treatment and surgeries, he read his Bible every night, volunteered at Prairie Heights Community Church, and remained calm and steady building memories with his family and friends. Family members, teachers, fellow students, pastors, other church volunteers and thousands of people near and far were inspired.

I recently witnessed 1,800 people come together in Scheels Arena to celebrate Landon Solberg’s life and light. Landon was a 12-year-old boy from West Fargo who died Sept 17 following a courageous battle with an aggressive brain tumor. His story was heartwarming, inspiring and heart-breaking; all three qualities and emotions on so many levels. Through several miraculous acts of God, including the love and support of thousands of people, Landon’s story went around the world.

In 2011, I jumped on the opportunity to become a founding member of the John Maxwell Team. My goal was to grow as a leader and get better as a public speaker. Not only did I grow in these two areas, I gained so many other benefits. One of them was an opportunity to continuously learn from gifted mentors.
